Central Railway in Mumbai is gearing up for a 63-hour mega block starting from Thursday midnight for platform extension works at Thane and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The planned works will lead to the cancellation of 73 outstation trains and 930 suburban locals between Friday and Sunday. The railway authorities have advised commuters to avoid travel during this period to minimize inconvenience.
The platform extension and widening works will be carried out at Thane and CSMT, affecting both local and long-distance train services. A total of 930 local train services, including 161 on Friday, 534 on Saturday, and 235 on Sunday, will be cancelled during this mega block.
The Central Railway has announced the extension of platform numbers 5 and 6 at Thane and platform numbers 10 and 11 at CSMT. This move is aimed at accommodating longer trains and providing enhanced facilities such as escalators and wider staircases.
During the mega block period, several mail-express and suburban trains will be short-terminated and short-originated at various stations, including Wadala, Dadar, Pune, Panvel, and Nashik. The railways have also requested establishments to allow employees to work from home to reduce the number of passengers.
To mitigate the impact on commuters, the Railways has planned to operate additional public buses along the affected sections as an alternative mode of transportation. These platform extension works are crucial for the long-term infrastructure improvement and are expected to provide lasting benefits to passengers and the railway network.
The mega block is scheduled to end at 3.30 pm on Sunday, following which normal train services will resume. Passengers are urged to cooperate with the Railway administration during this period of inconvenience for the betterment of rail services in Mumbai.
