In a diplomatic move aimed at bridging the gap between India and Maldives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to President Mohamed Muizzu on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha. This gesture comes at a crucial time when relations between the two nations have been strained since Muizzu, considered pro-China, assumed office in November last year.
India’s olive branch was further highlighted by the invitation extended to the Maldivian President to attend PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, showcasing a willingness to engage in dialogue and mend ties. Despite past tensions, PM Modi emphasized the values of sacrifice, compassion, and brotherhood in his Eid message, underscoring the importance of fostering peace and inclusivity in the region.
The Indian High Commission in Maldives shared PM Modi’s greetings, emphasizing the cultural and civilizational linkages that bind the two nations together. The message sought to celebrate the festival of Eid Al-Adha as a reflection of India’s rich multicultural heritage, uniting people in joy and festivity.
While the Maldives has been a key maritime neighbor for India in the Indian Ocean Region, recent strains in the relationship have posed challenges to bilateral cooperation. Muizzu’s election pledge to remove Indian military personnel from the archipelago had raised concerns, leading to a reshuffling of personnel from the Indian side.
Despite these hurdles, PM Modi’s diplomatic overtures signal a potential shift towards reconciliation and dialogue. By extending a hand of friendship during the auspicious occasion of Eid, India seeks to pave the way for constructive engagement and cooperation with Maldives, underscoring the importance of regional stability and peace.
