The ongoing water crisis in Delhi has sparked tension between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Haryana government, with AAP leader Gopal Rai launching scathing remarks at Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. Rai accused Saxena of siding with the BJP and neglecting the water scarcity issue in Delhi. The crisis, exacerbated by reduced water levels in the Yamuna River and technical glitches at water treatment plants, has left many areas in the national capital parched, forcing residents to rely on tankers and borewells.
Meanwhile, AAP leaders, including Sanjay Singh and Dilip Pandey, met with LG Saxena to discuss the pressing water shortage. Saurabh Bharadwaj, a prominent AAP figure, highlighted the critical need for Haryana to supply Delhi’s rightful share of water, emphasizing the detrimental impacts of the reduced allocation on the city’s residents.
The AAP government alleged that Haryana was withholding 117 MGD (million gallons per day) of water, plunging over 28 lakh people into distress. To protest against the alleged water cut, Delhi Water Minister Atishi commenced an indefinite fast, urging the Haryana government to fulfill its obligations.
Accusations of negative politics and water obstruction were hurled by the AAP at the BJP-led Haryana government, further complicating the already tense situation. Priyanka Kakkar, an AAP spokesperson, criticized Haryana for impeding Himachal Pradesh’s water supply to Delhi, breaching an established pact between the states.
As the political showdown intensifies, Delhi LG Saxena has agreed to meet with Atishi to address the water crisis. The outcome of this meeting and the subsequent steps taken by the authorities remain pivotal in resolving the dire water shortage afflicting the nation’s capital.
