Indian football icon Bhaichung Bhutia has announced his retirement from politics after facing defeat in the recent assembly elections in Sikkim. This marks his sixth electoral defeat, with his last loss in the Barfung seat to SKM’s Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia. Bhutia entered politics in 2014 as the TMC candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, later forming the Hamro Sikkim Party in 2018, which merged with the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) last year. In a statement, Bhutia congratulated the SKM for their victory and expressed his realization that electoral politics is not for him, leading to his decision to quit. Despite his passion for the development of sports and tourism in Sikkim, Bhutia acknowledges that others may have better ideas to contribute. His intention in politics was always to serve the people of the state and the country as a whole.
