Rahul Gandhi has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the 18th Lok Sabha by the Congress party, marking a significant development after the party’s resurgence in the general elections. The decision was conveyed by Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab, as announced by Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal following a meeting of the INDIA bloc at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence.

The appointment of Rahul Gandhi as the LoP comes after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) unanimously passed a resolution in June, requesting him to take charge. In previous terms, the Congress did not have the required number of MPs to appoint the LoP, but this election saw 99 Congress candidates emerge victorious, making it eligible for the position.

Rahul Gandhi, a five-term MP representing Rae Bareli, has held various significant roles within the Congress party and has now assumed the crucial responsibility of being the voice of the Opposition in high-powered committees deciding appointments of key officials like the CBI Director and Chief Election Commissioner.

As the largest opposition party, the Congress has signaled its intent to take on the ruling government aggressively with Rahul Gandhi at the helm as the Leader of Opposition. This appointment is a significant step in the political landscape, reaffirming the Congress’s commitment to protect democracy and uphold constitutional principles.

The recognition of Rahul Gandhi as the LoP in the Lok Sabha after a decade establishes a new dynamic in the parliamentary proceedings, with the Opposition poised to play a pivotal role under his leadership.
