Kerala is currently facing severe rainfall as the southwest monsoon intensifies, bringing about orange alerts in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall in several districts, leading to disruptions across the state.

In Kottayam, all educational institutions, including professional colleges, have been closed due to the continuous heavy rain since Tuesday night. Similarly, in Idukki, educational institutions in Devikulam panchayat will remain shut on Wednesday.

The situation in Ernakulam is equally dire, with reports of mudslides in hilly areas and ongoing waterlogging affecting daily life. The rising water levels in the Periyar river have prompted officials to open the shutters of Kallarkutty and Pambla dams, urging residents along the riverbank to remain vigilant.

North Kerala hasn’t been spared either, with Kozhikode and Kannur districts experiencing damages due to the heavy rain. In Kannur, a car was crushed by a compound wall collapse during the downpour. Flash flooding has also been reported in the Thottilpalam river in Kozhikode.

Moreover, in Thrissur, sea incursion has resulted in road damage and the flooding of over 40 houses in Fasal Nagar of Vadanappally. Residents are calling for proper measures, like constructing ‘groyne fields’ (pulimutt), to prevent further sea incursions.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod on June 26, indicating a forecast of heavy rainfall within 24 hours. Additionally, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for various districts, expecting significant rainfall in the coming days.

As the monsoon continues to impact Kerala, authorities are urging residents to stay safe and take necessary precautions. Stay tuned for more updates on the evolving weather situation in the state.
