Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda appealed to the opposition to let the House function smoothly amid an uproar in the Rajya Sabha over the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) issue. The government has taken the right decision to order a CBI probe, Deve Gowda said.
Rajya Sabha witnessed chaotic scenes as opposition members demanding a discussion on the alleged irregularities in the conduct of NEET raised slogans and entered the Well of the House during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that the government is ready for a discussion on the medical entrance exam NEET, but it should take place as per tradition and by maintaining decorum.
Interacting with reporters after the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day amid protests by the opposition demanding a discussion on the alleged irregularities in the conduct of NEET-UG, the minister appealed to them not to confuse the students. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Phulo Devi Netam was hospitalized after she felt dizzy and fell while protesting in the Well of the House over the NEET issue.
Congress leader Tariq Anwar, speaking to the media outside the Parliament, emphasized that the Opposition is united in its demand for a discussion on NEET in Parliament at the earliest. The opposition parties raised slogans demanding a debate on the NEET row as the discussion on the Motion of Thanks got underway in the Rajya Sabha.
The Congress party accused Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla of switching off the microphone of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi while he was raising the issue of the NEET row. As the opposition continued to press for a debate on the NEET row, the speaker adjourned the Lok Sabha till 11 am on Monday. Lok Sabha resumed its proceedings after a brief adjournment.
Rajya Sabha also adjourned following the uproar after the opposition’s demand for a discussion on the NEET row was declined by the Chairman. Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the NEET issue along with Opposition MPs and demanded a discussion over the matter. Lok Sabha session was adjourned till 12 noon amid the uproar over the Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the NEET row.
