PM Modi\u2019s visit comes at the invitation of Putin for the 22nd India-Russia summit scheduled for July 8 and 9, marking his first trip to Russia in nearly five years. The Kremlin highlighted the nature of the traditionally friendly Russian-Indian relations that the two leaders plan to further develop, along with discussing current issues of the international and regional agenda, according to Russian news agency TASS. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that the agenda for PM Modi\u2019s visit will be extensive, providing opportunities for both formal discussions and informal talks between the leaders. The strategic nature of Russian-Indian relations was emphasized by Peskov, describing the visit as very important and full-fledged. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the tremendous growth of India\u2019s economic relationship with Russia at the leadership level, presenting a great opportunity for PM Modi and President Putin to engage in direct dialogue. The annual summit between the Indian PM and the Russian President serves as the highest institutional dialogue mechanism in the strategic partnership between the two nations, with the last summit taking place on December 6, 2021, in New Delhi. The meeting will address a range of bilateral issues, from defense and trade to investment ties and energy cooperation, with a focus on discharging Indian nationals misled into serving in the Russian army. Modi\u2019s visit to Russia is significant amidst growing tensions between Russia and the West, particularly following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. India has refrained from outright criticism of Russia while maintaining a neutral stance on the conflict, urging both sides to end the war.
