On July 8, 2024, a massive combing operation continued in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua following a terror attack that resulted in the death of five army personnel. The attack occurred when terrorists targeted an army vehicle in the Machedi area in Billawar by opening fire on it and hurling grenades. Security forces launched a manhunt to track down the attackers, who are believed to have used sophisticated weapons to maximize casualties in the deadly assault. Sources suggest that 2-3 terrorists, possibly with local support, were involved in the attack, which took place inside a forest stretch near Badnota village in Lohai Malhar. Five other soldiers sustained injuries in the incident and are currently hospitalized.
The terrorists, accompanied by local supporters, managed to flee into the nearby forest after launching the ambush. Despite the subsequent retaliation by the army, along with police and paramilitary personnel, the attackers escaped. This terror attack marks the fifth incident in the Jammu region within a month, prompting widespread condemnation from political leaders and residents alike. The resurgence of militancy in the Jammu region, following its eradication over two decades ago, has raised concerns among various stakeholders.
Recent twin terror attacks in Doda district, as well as encounters resulting in the neutralization of terrorists, have intensified security operations in the area. Security forces have also announced cash rewards for the capture of Pakistani infiltrators believed to be involved in terrorist activities. The situation remains tense, with efforts to enhance counter-terrorism measures and maintain peace and stability in the region amidst escalating incidents of violence.
