As tensions escalate in the region, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have stepped up evacuation orders in Gaza City, leading to mass displacements of civilians. Over the past 10 days, the IDF has issued instructions for hundreds of thousands of people in various areas of Gaza City to leave, increasing the total number of displaced people to an estimated 1.9 million.

The latest evacuation order has prompted a large-scale movement of civilians, with many wary of leaving their shelters for the uncertainty of living on the streets or in overcrowded tent villages. The IDF maintains that these orders are necessary to prevent civilians from being caught up in ongoing operations where Hamas is actively trying to re-establish a presence.

Local journalist Khader Al Za’anoun described a chaotic scene as people in certain neighborhoods were instructed to move to shelters in the western part of Gaza City. The evacuation came amidst heavy drone and airstrikes, causing panic and fear among the residents.

The impact of the evacuation orders has been significant on the healthcare system in Gaza, with several hospitals forced to close their doors. One of the main hospitals, Al Ahli Baptist, shut down after being included in a ‘red zone’ for evacuation, leading to a strain on the already limited healthcare facilities in the region.

The constant displacement of civilians has made it challenging for aid agencies to provide essential services, including food distribution. The World Food Programme highlighted that nearly half a million people in Gaza are facing catastrophic levels of hunger, exacerbated by the difficulty in accessing and distributing aid due to the ongoing conflict.

As the situation continues to escalate, the need for humanitarian assistance and a resolution to the conflict becomes more urgent. The ongoing tensions in Gaza City and the surrounding areas indicate a pressing need for diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the civilians caught in the crossfire.
