The Bombay High Court on Friday granted relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the ongoing defamation case filed against him by an RSS worker, by quashing the Bhiwandi court order that allowed certain additional documents as evidence. The case dates back to 2014 when Gandhi made alleged defamatory statements accusing the RSS of being responsible for Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. The Magistrate Court had permitted the transcript of the speech as evidence, leading to the legal battle. Gandhi challenged this order in the High Court, citing a previous ruling that an accused cannot be compelled to admit or deny annexures. The High Court, presided over by Justice Prithviraj K Chavan, accepted Gandhi’s plea and directed the trial court to proceed in accordance with the law, emphasizing the need for an expedited trial process. The court noted the significant delay in the case, which has been ongoing for a decade. This ruling is a crucial development in the long-standing legal battle, ensuring a fair and swift trial moving forward.
