The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a significant step by deciding to release INR 1 crore as financial assistance for the treatment of former India cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad, who is currently battling blood cancer at a medical facility in London. This decision came shortly after emotional appeals from Gaekwad’s former teammates Kapil Dev and Sandip Patil. The 71-year-old Gaekwad, who represented India in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs between 1975 and 1987, has been undergoing treatment at the King’s College Hospital.
The announcement was made by Mr. Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, who instructed the board to provide this financial aid to support Gaekwad in his fight against cancer. The BCCI apex council stated, ‘Shah has also spoken to Mr. Gaekwad’s family to take stock of the situation and extend support. The board stands by Gaekwad’s family in this hour of crisis and will do whatever is essential for Mr. Gaekwad’s quick recovery.’ The board assured that they will continue to monitor Gaekwad’s progress and expressed confidence in his ability to overcome this challenging phase.
Gaekwad’s condition was brought to light by Sandip Patil earlier this month, with the former cricketer revealing that Gaekwad himself emphasized the need for financial assistance during his treatment. Following Patil’s disclosure, former World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev reached out to BCCI for financial help, along with other cricketing legends like Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and more.
Anshuman Gaekwad, who has been an integral part of Indian cricket, not only as a player but also as a coach and selector, has received tremendous support from the cricketing community during this challenging time. The cricket fraternity, led by BCCI, has come together to provide the necessary assistance to a former player in need, showcasing the spirit of solidarity and compassion within the sport. Gaekwad’s contribution to Indian cricket over the years has earned him the respect and support of fans and former colleagues alike.
