After a disappointing campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided to part ways with Igor Stimac as the head coach of the Indian national football team. Stimac, who took over as the coach in 2019, had his contract extended in 2023 by the AIFF, but the recent failure to qualify for the third round of the World Cup qualifier led to the termination of his engagement.
India’s journey in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification came to an end after a 1-2 defeat to Qatar in their final second-round match. Following the disappointing outcome, the AIFF unanimously agreed that a new Head Coach would be better suited to lead the team forward. A notice of termination has been issued to Mr. Stimac by the AIFF Secretariat, relieving him of his duties with immediate effect.
During Stimac’s five-year tenure, India’s FIFA ranking fluctuated from 101 in 2019 after the AFC Asian Cup to 99 in 2023 and now resting at 121. While under his coaching, India clinched four major trophies, including two SAFF Championships, one Intercontinental Cup, and a Tri-Nations Series, but the failure to progress in the World Cup qualifiers ultimately led to the decision to end his contract.
Stimac’s bold declaration that he would leave his position if he did not take India to the third round highlighted the significance of the qualifying campaign. Despite various challenges and shortcomings, including the team’s performance at the Hangzhou Asian Games, AFC Asian Cup 2023, and the recent World Cup qualifiers, Stimac remained steadfast in his beliefs of progress.
However, the AIFF’s decision to terminate his contract marks an end to his tenure as the head coach of the Indian football team. The federation thanked Mr. Stimac for his service to the National Team and wished him success in his future endeavors.”
