He praised the intense filmmakers and actors saying, ‘May their tribe flourish.’ Three Indian films, ‘All We Imagine As Light,’ ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know,’ and ‘The Shameless,’ clinched major awards at the prestigious event, making the 77th edition of the festival a memorable one for India.
Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia made history by winning the Grand Prix award for her debut fiction film, ‘All We Imagine As Light.’ The movie, featuring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, portrays the journey of three women from Mumbai on a road trip to a beach town. Kapadia’s achievement marks the first Indian film in 30 years to compete in a major festival and the first by an Indian woman.
In another remarkable feat, Anasuya Sengupta received the Best Actress award at Un Certain Regard for her role in ‘The Shameless.’ Directed by Konstantin Bojanov, the film narrates the story of two sex workers forming a friendship, earning Sengupta critical acclaim.
With Indian cinema shining on the international stage, these victories at Cannes highlight the talent and creativity of Indian filmmakers and actors.
