Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken his legal battle to the next level by moving the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court’s interim stay on a trial court’s order granting him bail in connection to a money-laundering case linked to the alleged excise scam. The High Court recently paused the release of Kejriwal after the trial court had granted him bail on June 20. This move comes as a significant development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21. The high court’s decision to grant interim relief to the federal anti-money laundering agency has further complicated the situation, preventing Kejriwal from walking out of Tihar Jail. Despite the trial court’s bail order indicating that Kejriwal’s guilt is yet to be established and the lack of direct evidence linking him to the proceeds of crime in the money-laundering case, the legal battle continues. The excise policy in question was scrapped in 2022 following allegations of irregularities and corruption. Both the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have highlighted irregularities in the formulation and execution of the policy, alleging undue favors extended to license holders. The Supreme Court’s involvement in this matter signifies the gravity of the situation and the importance of ensuring justice prevails in the legal proceedings. Kejriwal’s plea to the Supreme Court highlights his stance on the matter and emphasizes the need for fair treatment under the law, regardless of political affiliations or personal differences. As the legal battle unfolds, the nation watches closely to see how this high-profile case will impact the future of governance and accountability in the Indian political landscape.
