Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has expressed his concerns about the treatment of Muslims, tribals, and Dalits under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Owaisi criticized the UAPA as an extremely ruthless law that has led to the imprisonment and detriment of thousands of individuals belonging to marginalized communities. He highlighted the case of Stan Swamy, an 85-year-old tribal activist who died in judicial custody after being arrested under the UAPA.
Owaisi also called out the government for making the UAPA law even more stringent, with the Congress and BJP both being held accountable for their roles in reinforcing the legislation. Despite expecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to learn from the recent Lok Sabha election results, Owaisi expressed disappointment in the government’s lack of action in addressing the concerns raised by the marginalized communities affected by the UAPA.
Moreover, Owaisi raised objections to the amendments made in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act Bill 2019 and criticized the continuous implementation of the law that infringes on human rights and civil liberties. He emphasized the need for political leaders to acknowledge the impact of such stringent laws on vulnerable populations and work towards reforming them for a more just and equitable society.
In a separate development, the recent approval of the prosecution of author Arundhati Roy and former Professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain under the UAPA has sparked discussions about free speech and dissent in the country. The case, stemming from alleged provocative speeches made in 2010, has reignited debates around sedition laws and the stifling of differing opinions.
