Amidst the devastating floods in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted a thorough assessment of the flood-affected areas in Dibrugarh district, including urban locations. The embankments in the region have suffered breaches, leading to severe damage. During his visit, CM Sarma interacted with the affected residents to understand their challenges firsthand.
One of the major issues highlighted during the visit was the urban flooding in Dibrugarh town, exacerbated by clogged drains and the rising water levels of the Brahmaputra River, hindering proper drainage mechanisms. Sarma assured the residents of the government’s support through relief efforts and medical facilities, addressing their immediate needs.
The chief minister also inspected the embankment breaches at Khowang and Ghumtal areas, caused by the overflow of the Burhi Dihing River. He promised swift repairs and reinforced embankments to prevent future damage, emphasizing the importance of community-driven solutions to combat inundation.
In response to criticisms from the opposition party, Sarma emphasized the need for collaborative efforts rather than political blame games. He visited relief camps in Tengakhat to oversee the facilities and ensure comprehensive support for the displaced individuals. Sarma’s proactive approach included directing immediate medical attention for the sick and organizing relief distribution to address the urgent needs of the affected population.
The flood situation in Assam has worsened, affecting over 24 lakh people across 30 districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported two fatalities in a landslide and highlighted the extensive damage to croplands and infrastructure. Rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts to evacuate people and animals from the affected areas.
As the state grapples with the aftermath of the floods, CM Sarma’s visit and reassurances reflect the government’s commitment to addressing the crisis. The resilience of the affected communities, coupled with relief efforts and support from various agencies, form a testament to the unity and strength of the people of Assam during challenging times.
