Bangladesh’s Tanzim Hasan Sakib fined for inappropriate physical contact with Nepal captain in T20 World Cup

In a recent match during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Bangladesh pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib was penalized by the ICC for engaging in inappropriate physical contact with Nepal captain Rohit Paudel. The incident occurred during a Group D match at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on June 16.

Tanzim was found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, resulting in a 15 percent fine on his match fees and one demerit point added to his disciplinary record. The young pacer was charged with violating Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to inappropriate physical contact with any individual during an International Match.

The altercation took place at the end of the third over of Nepal’s innings. Tanzim, after delivering a ball, aggressively approached Rohit Paudel, leading to a verbal exchange that escalated into physical contact. The on-field umpires and teammates had to intervene to separate the players.

Tanzim admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thus avoiding the need for a formal hearing. His standout performance in the match, where he took four wickets for just seven runs, earned him the Player of the Match award as Bangladesh secured a spot in the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

This victory against Nepal propelled Bangladesh further in the competition, with their next match scheduled against Australia. Despite the controversy, Tanzim’s exceptional bowling performance remains a highlight of Bangladesh’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024.
