Heavy rains have been pounding Bengaluru for the past few days, breaking a 133-year-old record for the highest recorded rainfall in a single day in June. The city received over 100 mm of rainfall on Sunday alone, accompanied by strong gusty winds. According to the Karnataka Weather Department, Bengaluru recorded 140.7 mm of rain over the weekend, surpassing the 110.3 mm average for the month.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru until June 5, predicting cloudy skies with frequent rains and thundershowers. The heavy downpour has severely disrupted normal commute in the city, leading to massive traffic congestion due to uprooted trees and waterlogging on various roads.

In response to the adverse weather conditions, the IMD issued an orange alert on Sunday night, warning residents of Bengaluru about the likelihood of strong winds. The heavy rains also caused disruption in the Bengaluru metro services when a tree branch fell on the metro viaduct track between Trinity and MG Road stations, affecting hundreds of passengers.

Despite the challenges posed by the inclement weather, metro authorities swiftly responded to the incident and resumed normal operations on the Purple Line. Trains were running as per schedule, bringing relief to commuters who rely on the metro for daily transportation.

This year, the monsoon arrived early in Karnataka, a welcome change from the previous year when the delay in monsoon onset resulted in severe drought conditions affecting a significant part of the state. The early arrival of monsoon this year, just three days after entering Kerala, has brought much-needed relief to farmers and residents in Karnataka.

The unprecedented rainfall in Bengaluru serves as a reminder of the impact of changing weather patterns and the importance of preparedness in dealing with extreme weather events. With IMD issuing alerts and warnings, it is essential for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being amidst the heavy downpour.

As Bengaluru grapples with the aftermath of one of its heaviest rainfall spells, the city’s resilience and ability to overcome challenges are once again put to the test. Amidst the chaos brought by the rains, the spirit of unity and cooperation shines as residents come together to navigate through the adversities posed by nature’s fury.
