BJP Protests Across Karnataka Over Fuel Price Hike

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka is set to stage protests against the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices across the state. The protests, led by the party’s state unit president B Y Vijayendra, are in response to the Karnataka government’s decision to increase the sales tax on fuel on June 15th, which has resulted in higher costs for consumers. Petrol prices have risen by ₹3 per litre, while diesel prices have increased by ₹3.5 per litre.

Vijayendra has called on the Chief Minister to immediately withdraw the decision, emphasizing that the BJP will not remain silent until the hike is revoked. Protests are scheduled to take place in all district headquarters of the state on June 17th, highlighting the party’s strong opposition to the price hike.

Accusing the Chief Minister of being “desperate,” Vijayendra pointed out that the fuel price increase comes in the aftermath of the Lok Sabha elections, where the NDA secured a significant number of seats in Karnataka. He raised concerns about the impact of higher fuel prices on various sections of society, underscoring the need for the government to reconsider its decision.

Officials have stated that the fuel price hike is aimed at resource mobilization, with the Chief Minister reviewing the state’s revenue generation and fiscal position before implementing the tax increase. The BJP’s proactive stance against the price hike reflects a broader stance on economic policies and consumer welfare, as the party looks to address the concerns of the people amidst rising fuel costs.

As the protests unfold, the political landscape in Karnataka is becoming increasingly charged, with the ruling Congress facing strong opposition from the BJP. The outcome of these protests and the government’s response will likely have significant implications for the state’s economic policies and governance in the weeks to come.
