The recent record-breaking collapse of 10 bridges in Bihar within a span of 15 days has sent shockwaves across the state, shedding light on the underlying issues plaguing infrastructure projects. While the focus has been primarily on the quality of construction and materials used, officials have indicated that the root cause may be attributed to overzealous desilting activities.

As part of the preparations for the monsoon season, contracts were issued for dredging and desilting stretches of rivers in the state. However, the unscientific manner in which these activities were carried out has raised concerns. It has been revealed that during the desilting process, mud and silt were removed from around the bridge pillars, leaving them without a solid foundation. Additionally, dredging to increase water flow was conducted without considering the impact on the embankments, leading to structural vulnerabilities.

The adverse effects of these activities became evident during heavy monsoon rains, exposing weaknesses in the bridges. Some pillars collapsed due to lack of support, while others were eroded by the increased water flow caused by dredging, further compromising the structural integrity. Chaitanya Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department, acknowledged the issue, stating that a comprehensive policy on bridge maintenance is being formulated by the government.

The series of bridge collapses have drawn sharp criticism from the opposition, with leaders condemning the lack of accountability and transparency in the infrastructure projects. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, in a scathing remark, called out both the Prime Minister and Chief Minister for their silence on the matter, highlighting the prevalence of corruption within the state departments. The gravity of the situation has prompted Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary to order a survey of all old bridges in the state and launch a thorough investigation into the collapses.

The Nitish Kumar government is now in damage-control mode, seeking detailed reports from various departments and contractors involved in bridge construction. The Bihar Engineering Services Association has emphasized the need for third-party inspections to prevent future incidents. With the rising number of bridge collapses, accountability and stringent measures are imperative to ensure the safety of public infrastructure in Bihar. The recent bridge collapse crisis serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of thorough planning, construction quality, and oversight in infrastructure projects.
