The Calcutta High Court has taken a significant step in the ongoing issue surrounding the 2024 NEET (UG) examinations by seeking a response from the National Testing Agency (NTA) on alleged irregularities. The matter was brought before a division bench of Justices Apurba Sinha Ray and Kausik Chanda, where it was highlighted that some candidates may have received scores that seem questionable given the maximum marks available.
The petitioner pointed out that the NTA attempted to justify awarding these high marks based on a judgment from a previous case, which raised concerns about the fairness of the process. In response, the Court has called on the NTA to submit an affidavit addressing the allegations raised in the petition within the next ten days.
Moreover, the Court has requested the NTA to clarify how the reservation policies of both the State and Central Government were applied in compiling the merit list. The case, titled Tanmoy Chattopadhyay v National Testing Agency & Ors, WPA(P) 236 of 2024, will be revisited in two weeks before the Regular Bench. Furthermore, the NTA has been instructed to maintain all records related to the NEET (UG) 2024 Examination until further notice.
The outcome of the counseling process following the examination will be contingent upon the resolution of the writ petition, indicating the gravity of the situation and the importance of addressing these alleged irregularities in a timely and transparent manner.
