Chaos and violence erupted at a peaceful Juneteenth celebration in Oakland, California, as an illegal sideshow led to at least 15 people being shot, sparking a thorough investigation for multiple shooters. The incident took place near Lake Merritt on June 19, 2024. The illegal sideshow, which involved vehicles like all-terrain bikes and dirt bikes, disrupted the peaceful event attended by around 5,000 people. According to reports, more than 50 shell casings were recovered at the scene, indicating the involvement of multiple shooters. Despite the chaos, no arrests had been made by Thursday afternoon. The sideshow, also known as street takeovers, typically involve stunts like doughnuts, drifting, and burnouts, attracting hundreds of spectators. These events often block access to intersections, causing traffic disruptions and difficulties for law enforcement to respond effectively. Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell addressed the media, revealing that some individuals attacked police officers during the incident. One person even required hospitalization after being assaulted by multiple occupants of a sideshow vehicle. Detectives are currently scouring social media for leads on the identities of the shooters. The victims of the shooting, aged between 20 and 30 years old, suffered various injuries, with at least one person in critical condition. The unfortunate incident marred what was supposed to be a day of celebration and remembrance of Juneteenth, a significant day in history marking the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth, designated as a federal holiday in 2021, has grown in recognition beyond the Black American community, with many people participating in street festivals, fairs, and concerts. The violence at the Oakland Juneteenth celebration is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges of gun violence and the need for community safety and unity.
