China’s Ministry of State Security recently alleged that the United Kingdom’s Secret Intelligence Service MI6 had recruited Chinese state employees as spies. The Chinese ministry accused MI6 operatives of turning a Chinese man identified as Wang and his wife Zhou against Beijing, who worked in ‘core confidential’ departments in a Chinese state agency. The report mentioned that MI6 began cultivating Wang in 2015 while he was studying in the UK under a Sino-British exchange program. Despite initial hesitance, Wang eventually agreed to work for the UK operatives. Wang’s wife, Zhou, also agreed to collect intelligence for the British. China claimed that the UK provided special care to Wang by inviting him for dinners and tours to understand his interests and weaknesses. Livemint could not confirm or deny these allegations. This news comes after the UK charged individuals with spying for China, sparking tensions between the two countries. These escalating espionage accusations have fueled suspicions and strained relations between Beijing and London. The accusations have led to a series of allegations and counter-allegations between China and the UK, heightening the existing tensions.
