Chinese Envoy Xu Feihong Presents Credentials to Indian President Amid Growing Turbulence in India-China Relations

In a significant diplomatic development, Chinese envoy Xu Feihong, who recently arrived in New Delhi to fill a long-standing vacancy, presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu. This ceremony, held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, also saw the presentation of credentials by the new British high commissioner, Lindy Elizabeth Cameron, and envoys from five other countries. Xu’s appointment comes at a crucial juncture when India-China relations are facing unprecedented challenges due to an ongoing military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), now in its fifth year. Despite his recent arrival, Xu has expressed his commitment to fostering deeper understanding and friendship between the two countries, emphasizing the need to restore cooperation in various sectors. While Xu has reiterated China’s stance on the border issue, urging for its placement in the broader context of the bilateral relationship, India has emphasized the importance of restoring peace and tranquillity along the LAC before normalizing overall ties. The impasse at key points like Depsamg and Demchok continues despite numerous diplomatic and military dialogues. The incoming British high commissioner, Lindy Elizabeth Cameron, will also play a crucial role in advancing bilateral relations, particularly in finalizing the India-UK free trade agreement (FTA). Negotiations for the FTA, initiated in 2022 and currently in the 14th round, are yet to resolve key issues surrounding tariffs on British goods, market access, and professional mobility. Apart from Xu Feihong, envoys from New Zealand, Ecuador, Kuwait, Guinea, and Fiji also presented their credentials during the ceremony, underscoring the diverse diplomatic engagements shaping India’s foreign relations landscape. Xu Feihong’s arrival marks a pivotal moment in the evolving dynamics between India and China, with hopes pinned on constructive dialogue and mutual cooperation to navigate the current challenges and build a stable foundation for future engagements.
