Indian badminton star, Chirag Shetty, has raised his voice against the Maharashtra government for their perceived unequal treatment towards various sports. Shetty expressed his disappointment after the state government felicitated Indian cricketers Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal for their T20 World Cup victory, while overlooking achievements in other sports. Shetty, who is gearing up for the Paris Olympics, emphasized the importance of treating all sports equally. He highlighted his role in India’s historic Thomas Cup win in 2022 and questioned why his efforts were not recognized in the same manner as the cricketers. The badminton star stressed that the Thomas Cup win was equivalent to winning the World Cup and the government should acknowledge achievements in all sports with equal enthusiasm. Shetty, along with his doubles partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, made history by becoming the first Indian pair to achieve the world No.1 ranking in men’s doubles. He reiterated that his concerns are not against cricket but for the fair treatment of all sports. Shetty’s comments come amidst a debate over the prioritization of cricket over other sports in India, urging for a more inclusive approach towards recognizing sporting achievements.
