An anti-Maoist operation in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district has uncovered a significant find that could have far-reaching consequences for the local economy. Security forces discovered equipment used to print counterfeit currency in Maoist camps for the first time. The operation, carried out by Sukma Police, District Reserve Guard, and the CRPF, revealed currency printers, ink, templates, and fake notes of various denominations at a hideout in the forests of Korajguda. This discovery indicates that the rebels may be facing a cash crunch due to intensified security operations in the area. The use and circulation of fake currency in local markets could pose a serious threat to the region’s financial stability. District police chief Kiran Chavan highlighted that the Maoists’ new tactic to print money suggests a shortage of funds, leading them to resort to counterfeiting. It’s reported that counterfeit currency in denominations of Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, and Rs 500 was seized along with other items such as a gun, explosives, and a wireless set. The local authorities and security forces are now conducting awareness campaigns to educate residents about identifying fake currency and urging traders to be vigilant. Moreover, sources indicate that Maoists have been using this tactic since 2022 to address their financial challenges and infuse counterfeit money into the local economy.
