Cyclone Remal, the first pre-monsoon cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this season, is expected to make landfall between West Bengal’s Sagar Island and Bangladesh’s Khepupara on Sunday night. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the cyclone will intensify further and cross the West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts, with wind speeds of 110 to 120 mph, gusting to 135 mph around midnight.

Madhavan Rajeevan, former secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, highlighted the sea surface temperature of 30 degrees Celsius in the Bay of Bengal, conducive for tropical cyclone formation. As Cyclone Remal approaches, it is crucial to follow safety guidelines to mitigate risks and stay protected.

Before Cyclone hits, individuals are advised to secure their houses by cementing loose tiles, repairing doors and windows, and keeping wooden boards ready for protection. Essential items like a hurricane lantern, flashlight, dry cells, radio, and extra batteries should be readily available. It is important to stay informed with official weather warnings, track the movement of the cyclone, and store important documents in waterproof packages. Additionally, stock up on non-perishable food and drinking water, charge electronic devices, and keep battery-operated torches handy.

During the Cyclone, it is essential to keep doors and windows shut, turn off electrical mains, switch off gas supply, and drink boiled water to prevent infection. Stay alert for 24 hours post-cyclone alert, as danger looms. After the Cyclone passes, follow guidelines such as staying in shelters until advised, avoiding contact with loose wires, clearing debris, reporting damages, and refraining from entering unsafe buildings or coastal areas with high tides.

Overall, Cyclone Remal demands preparedness, caution, and adherence to safety protocols to minimize risks and ensure the well-being of individuals. By staying informed and following recommended measures, communities can enhance their resilience to cyclonic impacts.
