The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi has taken stringent measures to address the water shortage in the national capital. Washing cars with hoses, using domestic water for commercial purposes, and overflowing water tanks will now result in a fine of Rs 2,000. Delhi minister Atishi has directed the Delhi Jal Board to form 200 teams to monitor and reduce instances of water wastage across residential areas. These teams will crack down on activities such as washing cars with pipe water, overflowing water tanks, using domestic water for commercial purposes, and utilizing drinking water at construction sites.
The move comes in the wake of the scorching summer causing a severe water crisis in Delhi. The water level in Wazirabad, one of the six water treatment plants in the city, has significantly dropped, leading to water scarcity in several areas. As temperatures soar close to 50 degrees Celsius, the AAP government is ramping up efforts to tackle the crisis.
Delhi residents are urged to use water judiciously and cooperate with the water rationalisation efforts. The government is also in talks with the Haryana government regarding water supply, with a potential legal recourse if the situation does not improve. Meanwhile, the Opposition BJP has criticized the Delhi government for its lack of preparedness in addressing the water crisis, pointing out the failure to implement a ‘Summer Action Plan’.
As the city continues to battle extreme heatwave conditions, the Delhi Jal Board is deploying 200 teams to enforce fines on those wasting water. Illegal water connections at construction sites and commercial establishments will also be disconnected. With temperatures hitting record highs, the need for efficient water management and conservation practices is more crucial than ever.
