In recent news, the Delhi Police has taken a significant step following the demand from the National Commission for Women (NCW) to arrest a man for a derogatory and lewd comment made towards Smriti Singh, the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh. The incident has caused outrage on social media, with users calling for strict action against the perpetrator. The disrespectful comment was made on a photo of Mrs. Singh at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she received the award on behalf of her husband who heroically sacrificed his life while rescuing his colleagues from a fire in an Indian Army ammunition dump at Siachen Glacier.
Captain Anshuman Singh, a medical officer with the 26 Punjab regiment, was tragically killed in the line of duty. He bravely attempted to save his fellow army personnel from the blaze, but unfortunately succumbed to severe burns while trying to retrieve life-saving medicine from a medical shelter during the incident. The heartfelt gesture of Captain Singh’s sacrifice has touched the nation, leading to an outpouring of tributes and emotional support for his family.
The NCW has condemned the inappropriate comment as a violation of legal statutes and has urged the Delhi Police to take swift action in apprehending the individual responsible. The commission cited sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000, under which the comment is deemed unlawful. In response to the NCW’s demand, the Delhi Police has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the man, initiating a formal investigation into the matter.
Following the tragic events of July 19, 2023, where Captain Singh lost his life in the line of duty, his family and loved ones have been enduring immense grief. The posthumous recognition of his bravery through the Kirti Chakra award serves as a reminder of his sacrifice and commitment to serving the nation. The actions taken by the Delhi Police in response to the disrespectful comment aim to uphold the dignity of Captain Anshuman Singh’s legacy and provide justice for his family in the face of unwarranted online abuse.
