Heavy rainfall in Delhi has caused chaos and havoc as the capital city grapples with waterlogging and flooding. Several MPs, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav, were affected by the heavy downpour. Tharoor shared his ordeal on social media, mentioning that his entire home was submerged under a foot of water, leading to damage to carpets and furniture. The storm water drains in the neighborhood were clogged, exacerbating the situation. Despite the challenges, Tharoor managed to reach Parliament on time after the water was pumped out of the roads. A video of Yadav’s staff carrying him through the flooded area outside his bungalow highlighted the difficulties faced by politicians. The Delhi Water Minister Atishi’s residence was also submerged, adding to the woes in the capital. The flooding also led to a symbolic protest by Delhi BJP councillor Ravinder Singh Negi, who rowed an inflatable boat on a waterlogged street, bringing attention to the dire conditions. The India Meteorological Department reported record-breaking rainfall in Delhi, marking the highest 24-hour June rainfall since 1936. The heavy rain also resulted in the collapse of a portion of the roof at Terminal-1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, causing one fatality and multiple injuries. The situation in Delhi underscores the need for better infrastructure and preparedness to handle extreme weather events.
