Following the recent controversy surrounding the addition of the ancient Hindu text Manusmriti in the curriculum of law courses at the Faculty of Law, Delhi University, there has been a significant development. The proposal to include Manusmriti in law courses has been rejected by Delhi University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Yogesh Singh. This decision came after strong opposition from various quarters regarding the inclusion of Manusmriti in the syllabus.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed the rejection of the proposal by the Vice-Chancellor, stating that the Academic Council did not endorse any such proposal. The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to the Constitution and the importance of upholding its true spirit.

In an updated statement to The Indian Express, Vice-Chancellor Singh mentioned that the varsity held a review meeting and decided to reject the inclusion of suggested readings on Manusmriti in the Jurisprudence paper. The Faculty of Law Dean, Prof Anju Vali Tikoo, highlighted the need for discussions around the course content.

The proposed readings on Manusmriti, which included ‘Manusmriti with the Manubhasya’ by GN Jha and ‘Commentary of Manu Smriti – Smritichandrika’ by T Krishnaswami Iyer, were met with criticism due to the text’s contentious nature. Manusmriti has faced backlash for its endorsement of the caste system, gender inequality, and outdated social norms.

BSP President Mayawati also welcomed the decision, expressing that the inclusion of Manusmriti goes against the principles of the Indian Constitution, as envisioned by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. She emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity and welfare objectives of the Constitution by rejecting such proposals.

Overall, the rejection of including Manusmriti in the law courses at Delhi University marks a significant step towards preserving inclusive and progressive education in the country.
