Delhi, the capital city of India, is currently grappling with a severe water crisis that has left residents struggling for basic water supply. The crisis has escalated to the point where political parties are taking to the streets to protest against the lack of action by the government. Recently, the Delhi Congress organized a ‘matka phod’ protest against the AAP-led Delhi government, which is their ally in the INDIA bloc.
The protest, led by Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav, saw members smashing earthen pots to the ground and raising slogans against the AAP government and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The protest spanned across 280 blocks in the national capital, including prominent areas like Pushp Vihar, Tughlakabad, Raja Garden, and Tagore Garden.
Yadav highlighted the urgency of the situation by demanding a special session of the assembly to address the ongoing water crisis. He criticized both the Delhi government and the central government for playing the blame game instead of finding a solution to the issue. Yadav emphasized that the public is facing extreme hardships due to the water shortage and called for a thorough investigation into the water tanker mafia and the quality of water being supplied to residents.
The water crisis in Delhi has been exacerbated by the reduced water levels in the Yamuna River and technical glitches at crucial water treatment plants. This has resulted in several parts of the city experiencing a severe shortage of water, forcing residents to rely on private water tankers and borewells for their daily needs.
In response to the protests by the Congress, the ruling AAP government alleged that neighboring states like Haryana have been withholding Delhi’s share of water. The BJP also joined the protest, staging demonstrations against the AAP government and the water minister.
The ‘matka phod’ protest and the subsequent political reactions underscore the severity of the water crisis in Delhi and the urgent need for concrete action to address the issue and ensure that residents have access to a reliable water supply.
