In the wake of the recent surge of violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district and the attack on Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s security convoy, concerns have been raised about security breaches and accountability of police officers who received advance intelligence reports. BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh has demanded an inquiry into the lackadaisical attitude of officers who were given advance intelligence regarding the situation in Jiribam earlier this year. He emphasized that these officers should be held accountable for the loss of lives and property, pending inquiry leading to suspension and strict actions as per the law.
Furthermore, highlighting the relation to the Jiribam incident, Singh pointed out the need to investigate the ambush on the state police team accompanying the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister’s office had previously instructed the police department to submit an action taken report on the security measures in Jiribam due to the movement of armed militants. Orders were issued to prevent escalation of the law and order situation and implement effective countermeasures.
The discontent with the authorities has grown, with civil society organizations expressing concerns about the security situation. Additionally, former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh labeled the attack on the CM’s convoy as a failure of the state’s intelligence agency. The conflict in Manipur has drawn attention to the role of armed groups from different communities, highlighting the need for thorough investigations into the underlying causes and accountability of security forces amidst the escalating tensions in the region.
