Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to skip the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Astana, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar set to represent India at the event. The SCO summit, scheduled for July 3 and 4, will see the participation of member countries including China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The decision for PM Modi to skip the summit comes as he plans a visit to Russia from July 8 to 9, marking his first trip to the country in nearly five years. Following his visit to Russia, PM Modi is expected to travel to Austria on July 9 for a two-day trip.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that PM Modi would not be attending the SCO summit due to his scheduled visits to Russia and Austria. This move highlights India’s commitment to strengthening ties with these countries and fostering diplomatic relationships. Meanwhile, the Indian delegation at the summit will be led by EAM Jaishankar, who will address key issues such as regional security, connectivity, and trade during the meetings. The SCO, an influential economic and security bloc, plays a crucial role in addressing security concerns, combating terrorism, and promoting economic development in the region.

India’s association with the SCO dates back to 2005 when it became an observer country, later attaining full membership status in 2017. The country has actively participated in SCO initiatives, including the Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS) which focuses on security and defense cooperation. Despite PM Modi’s absence, India’s representation at the SCO summit underscores the nation’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and regional stability. With EAM Jaishankar leading the delegation, India is poised to contribute to discussions on critical issues impacting the SCO member countries.
