Google has recently announced the rollout of a new feature in the latest version of Chrome for Android that aims to enhance multitasking capabilities for users. The feature, known as Minimized Custom Tabs, allows users to minimize custom tabs into a picture-in-picture (PiP) window, facilitating seamless transitions between native app and web content.
This new functionality was initially spotted back in March when Google was testing it, and now it has made its way to the main stage with the latest Chrome update. Users will notice a down button in the Chrome Custom Tabs toolbar, which, when tapped, shrinks the webpage into a compact PiP window that hovers above the app previously in use. Tapping on the PiP window will maximize the tab, restoring it to full size.
According to Google, the primary focus of the Minimized Custom Tabs feature is to promote multitasking among users. By enabling this feature, users can effortlessly switch between native apps and web content, improving overall productivity.
For developers, Google highlights that this change will be automatically applied with Chrome version M124. Everyday users can expect to see the minimize icon with Chrome version 124 for Android, which has already been released.
The seamless integration of Minimized Custom Tabs resonates with Google’s commitment to enhancing the Chrome browsing experience. By providing users with the ability to minimize custom tabs and navigate between different tasks more efficiently, Chrome aims to streamline the in-app browsing experience for Android users.
With this new feature, Chrome users can expect a more fluid and intuitive multitasking experience, allowing them to make the most of their time spent online while using the browser on their Android devices.
