French President Emmanuel Macron faced setbacks in the EU parliament elections, while Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholtz and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also grappled with political turmoil at home. The approval ratings of Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were also under scrutiny.
Despite these internal challenges, the G7 leaders came together to address key global issues, particularly in relation to Russia, Ukraine, and China. The group announced a $50 billion loan to Ukraine from frozen Russian assets, signaling a strong stance against Russian aggression. Additionally, the US imposed new sanctions on Russian entities, and security pacts were signed between Ukraine, the US, and Japan.

However, questions about the group’s relevancy and inclusiveness lingered, especially in the face of emerging global power structures and the rise of groups like BRICS. The shifting dynamics of global politics, coupled with protectionist policies and sanctions, have raised concerns about the G7’s ability to lead in a changing world.
