Former opening batter Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team is all but confirmed. For months, Gambhir has linked with the India coach job, with current boss Rahul Dravid’s contract set to expire after the ongoing T20 World Cup. According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, Gambhir’s appointment will be made official by the BCCI in the coming days. After being approached by the BCCI, Gambhir accepted the offer, but laid down a few demands, which have been accepted by the board.

The BCCI source revealed, “We have held talks with Gambhir to become the head coach of the Indian team. He will replace the outgoing Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup.” Gambhir expressed his willingness to take on the role, but with the condition of being able to choose his support staff. His demand has been accepted, and an official announcement regarding his appointment is expected later this month.

With Gambhir’s tenure as coach on the horizon, changes in the support staff are imminent. The report indicated that Gambhir will not only revamp the support staff but also bring about alterations within the team structure. His successful leadership at Kolkata Knight Riders, allowing them to secure the IPL 2024 title, has bolstered his reputation as a top coaching contender.

Having been a part of India’s victorious T20 World Cup squad in 2007 and the 2011 ODI World Cup team, Gambhir’s experience and cricketing acumen make him a highly anticipated appointment for the national team. His passion for coaching the Indian side was evident when he mentioned, “there is no bigger honour than coaching the national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well.” Gambhir’s coaching journey is set to commence, bringing a fresh perspective and energy to the Indian cricketing landscape.
