A gas leak incident at Malaysia’s main international airport has left 39 people ill, authorities reported. The incident took place at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where fire services responded to a chemical leak at an aircraft engineering facility. The Selangor state fire department stated that 39 victims suffered from dizziness and nausea as a result of the leak. Fourteen of the affected individuals were taken to the air disaster unit for treatment, while one person required hospitalization. All those impacted work for three companies operating within the facility.
Officials assured that the gas leak did not disrupt passengers or flights and posed no wider risk to public safety. The source of the gas leak was identified as methyl mercaptan, a substance added to liquefied petroleum gas to give it a distinct odor resembling rotten cabbages. The gas leak was traced back to a skid tank that had been left unattended for nine years. Emergency crews were working to contain and cover the leak.
The incident highlights the importance of proper maintenance and oversight in industrial facilities to prevent such hazardous occurrences. The safety and well-being of employees and the surrounding community must always be top priorities to avoid such incidents in the future.
