The Gujarat High Court recently made a significant decision regarding the release of the debut film ‘Maharaj’, starring Junaid Khan, son of Bollywood star Aamir Khan. The movie, which had been facing a temporary stay, was given the green light by the court. The film, based on an 1862 libel case, sparked controversy among some members of the Pushtimarg sect who claimed that it hurt religious sentiments. However, the High Court, after reviewing the film, concluded that there was nothing objectionable in it that would offend the religious sentiments of any specific community.
Justice Sangeeta Vishen, in her judgment, stated that the core message of the film focuses on social evils and the fight against them by social reformer Karsandas Mulji, a member of the Vaishnavite community. The court emphasized that the film had received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and did not target any particular sect. Therefore, the interim stay placed on the movie’s release was lifted by the court, paving the way for its premiere.
The 1862 libel case, which the film is based on, involves a controversy between a Vaishnavite religious leader and social reformer, Karsandas Mulji. The court’s decision to allow the release of ‘Maharaj’ highlights the importance of freedom of expression while ensuring that cultural and religious sensitivities are respected. With this development, audiences can now look forward to experiencing Junaid Khan’s debut performance in this highly-anticipated film.
