The Gujarat High Court has taken a firm stance in the aftermath of the tragic fire incident at a gaming zone in Rajkot. The Court has ordered the State government to set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the events surrounding the May 24 incident. Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi emphasized the importance of a thorough inquiry into the matter, ensuring that no official found guilty or irresponsible is spared. The Court has also directed an investigation into the inaction of senior officers of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation, highlighting the need to address any dereliction of duties or negligence. The order, dated June 13, calls for all aspects of inaction by municipal officers to be brought to light. Moreover, the Court has extended its scrutiny to all municipal corporations in the State in light of recent tragic incidents such as the Morbi bridge collapse and the Harni Lake boat tragedy. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety of public places managed by corporations and the need for strict adherence to regulatory measures. In response to these developments, the State has been tasked with physically inspecting schools to assess fire safety measures and building permissions. Reports on these matters are expected to be filed before the Court within one month, with further proceedings scheduled for July 4. The High Court’s intervention in this matter follows its suo motu cognizance of the Rajkot fire incident, where 27 lives were lost. The Court expressed shock at the possible exploitation of regulatory loopholes and the lack of proper permissions for structures at the gaming zone. As the investigation progresses, the Court aims to hold accountable those responsible for the lapses that led to the tragic outcome. Advocate DM Devnani has assisted the Court in navigating this complex case, while governmental officials have also been directed to provide necessary information for the inquiry. The pursuit of justice and accountability in the wake of this disaster remains paramount, as the Court seeks to ensure the safety and well-being of the public in similar establishments in the future.
