As the conflict between Hamas and Israel continues to escalate in Gaza, the military leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, has reportedly expressed confidence in gaining the upper hand over Israel. According to leaked messages reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Sinwar believes that the increasing civilian death toll in Gaza is playing into the militant group’s favor.
Sinwar, who has not been seen in public since Hamas’s attack on Israel in October, is said to be hiding deep underground in the group’s tunnel system below Gaza. The leaked messages shed light on Sinwar’s unwavering determination to continue fighting, despite the human cost involved. He described civilian deaths as “necessary sacrifices” and emphasized the importance of high casualties to ramp up international pressure on Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded to the leaked messages, accusing Sinwar of profiting off the deaths of Gazan civilians to push for global pressure on Israel’s efforts to eliminate Hamas. The messages also revealed Sinwar’s surprise at the brutality of the October attack, where civilian women and children were taken as hostages.
In the midst of ceasefire negotiations, Sinwar’s alleged comments have sparked global attention and scrutiny. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted Sinwar’s influence in Hamas and emphasized the significance of the group’s response to the latest ceasefire proposal presented by US President Joe Biden.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) recently endorsed a US-drafted resolution aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. Hamas welcomed the resolution and expressed readiness to engage with mediators to implement the proposed measures.
Sinwar’s strategic maneuvers and tough negotiating stance have drawn international attention and support, particularly from regional allies seeking a two-state solution. While Israel’s military campaign continues, Sinwar’s ability to leverage global outrage over Palestinian suffering has positioned him as a formidable player in the ongoing conflict.
