The tragic incident at a religious event in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, where at least 121 people lost their lives in a stampede, has raised questions about the organizers’ responsibility. The site was overcrowded, with over two lakh devotees attending a ‘satsang’ of Bhole Baba, also known as Narayan Saakar Hari. The FIR filed against a close aide of the self-styled godman and event organizers did not mention Bhole Baba by his original name, Suraj Pal Singh, as an accused. The FIR accused the organizers of hiding the true number of attendees, not cooperating in traffic management, and concealing evidence after the stampede. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene with a large crowd in a confined space, leading to the tragic incident. The compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured has been announced. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered an investigation into the incident, and both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu have expressed their condolences and offered support to the state government in dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy.
