The recent and heartbreaking incident of four Indian students drowning in the Volkhov river in Russia has sent shockwaves through the nation. Among the victims was Jishan Ashpak Pinjari, who was on a video call with his family moments before the tragic event unfolded. Alongside him, the three other students, Harshal Anantrao Desale, Jia Firoj Pinjari, and Malik Gulamgous Mohammad Yakub, all studying at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University, met an untimely demise while taking a walk along the river. A fellow student, Nisha Bhupesh Sonawane, miraculously survived and is currently under the care of local medical staff. The district collector of Jalgaon, Ayush Prasad, is working on arrangements to bring the bodies of the deceased students back to India.

The heartbreaking account reveals that Jishan, during the video call with his family, faced a harrowing situation as a strong wave swept him and his companions away, despite desperate pleas for them to exit the river waters. Jishan and his sister Jia, both from Amalner in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, were part of the group caught in the tragic accident. The university they attended expressed condolences over the unexpected tragedy, emphasizing the accidental nature of the incident. The Indian envoy in Russia has been contacted for assistance in repatriating the bodies of the students to India, in a somber reminder of the risks that can surface even in routine moments.

The Consulate General of India in St Petersburg confirmed that the students, aged between 18 and 20, were pursuing medical education at the University. The surviving student, Nisha, is currently being monitored closely by medical professionals in Russia. The Pinjari family, grappling with the aftermath of the incident, highlights the unforeseen dangers that can emerge even in seemingly tranquil settings. Efforts are underway for the repatriation of the deceased students, as their families and local authorities come to terms with the tragic loss. The search for the missing students continues, as the nation mourns the untimely demise of promising young minds.
