In a historic moment for the Indian military, two classmates, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi and Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, are set to lead the Indian Army and Navy simultaneously. The two officers, who studied together at the Sainik School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, share a unique bond that dates back to their school days in the early 1970s. Lt Gen Dwivedi and Admiral Tripathi were not only classmates but also had roll numbers that were close to each other, showcasing the synchronicity in their journey. Their friendship has endured over the years, despite serving in different branches of the military. A defense official highlighted the significance of strong relationships among senior military leaders in fostering cooperation between the forces. The Defense Ministry spokesperson, A Bharat Bhushan Babu, praised Sainik School, Rewa, for producing two exceptional students who have risen to the top positions in the Army and Navy after five decades. The appointments of the two classmates have coincided, with Admiral Tripathi assuming command of the Navy on May 1 and Lt Gen Dwivedi scheduled to take over as Army Chief tomorrow. Lt Gen Dwivedi brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as the Northern Army Commander and being actively involved in managing operations along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. With a strong background in strategy and leadership, Lt Gen Dwivedi is well-positioned to lead the Army effectively. His innovative approach to incorporating technology in military operations, such as big data analytics, AI, quantum solutions, and blockchain-based systems, reflects his forward-thinking mindset. Furthermore, Lt Gen Dwivedi has also undertaken foreign assignments, including serving as part of UNOSOM II in Somalia and as a military advisor to the Seychelles government. His academic achievements include a Master’s degree in Military Science and Defense and Management Studies, along with an MPhil in Defense and Management Studies. The elevation of these two accomplished classmates to the top positions in the Indian Army and Navy marks a significant milestone in the country’s military history, highlighting the dedication and excellence nurtured at institutions like Sainik School, Rewa.
