The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is creating a buzz with reports suggesting that India’s matches might be held in Dubai as part of a hybrid model. Initially, there were speculations about India’s participation in the tournament, but the BCCI vice-president clarified that no decision had been made yet. The reluctance of the Indian team to travel to Pakistan has sparked discussions about alternate venues for the matches.
The recent report from The Express Tribune highlights the possibility of the ICC hosting India’s matches in Dubai. Given the strained relations between India and Pakistan, the BCCI has not toured the neighbouring country since the 2008 Asia Cup. With no visits to Pakistan for 16 years, the upcoming Champions Trophy poses logistical challenges for Indian participation.
The ICC will make a final decision at its annual conference in Colombo from July 19-22. A ‘contingency budget’ is being discussed to accommodate matches outside Pakistan, with Dubai emerging as a favored location. If the matches are relocated, a hybrid model could see games split between Karachi and Dubai, with Lahore and Rawalpindi as potential venues.
During the Asia Cup last year, India also declined to travel to Pakistan, leading to matches being held in Sri Lanka. The introduction of a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy could impact Pakistan’s revenue if India progresses in the tournament. Furthermore, relocating semi-finals and finals may add complexity to the event logistics.
Reports indicate that India and Pakistan are likely to be grouped together, raising anticipation for intense matchups. Group A is expected to include New Zealand and Bangladesh, while Group B is set to feature Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan. The dynamic setting of Dubai’s International Stadium could host India’s matches, featuring key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah striving for success.
