India’s 2024 Lok Sabha election results are hinting at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), potentially needing assistance from junior partners to form a government in India’s parliamentary system. In the previous 2019 election, the BJP won with an impressive 303 out of the 543 seats in Parliament, well above the required 272 for a majority. However, in the current election, early results suggest a dip in electoral support for the BJP, with projections indicating they may only secure around 240 seats.

While winning 240 seats is still a significant accomplishment, representing 44% of the lower house of Parliament, it falls short of the expectations set by Mr. Modi and his party based on previous electoral performances. This potential shortfall could have political implications for the BJP and the formation of the next government.

With the likelihood of needing support from junior partners to reach the majority threshold, likely around 272 seats, the BJP may have to navigate alliances and negotiations to secure the necessary backing for forming the government. While Mr. Modi is still in a strong position to secure a third term as Prime Minister, the tighter electoral margins suggest a shift in the political landscape that could impact the dynamics of governance in India moving forward.
