India has expressed deep concern over the heartbreaking loss of civilian lives in the Israeli airstrike in Rafah earlier this week. The Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, reiterated the country’s call for the protection of the civilian population and the resumption of efforts aimed at a two-state solution. The world community has also been alarmed by Israel’s threats of a full-scale land invasion of Rafah, warning that such an attack would cross a red line .
India’s long-standing position supports a two-state solution, recognizing the establishment of a sovereign, viable, and independent state of Palestine within recognized and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace. This position was reiterated by Jaiswal in response to a question during a media briefing.
The recent Israeli airstrike on Rafah resulted in the tragic deaths of 45 individuals, most of them women, children, and the elderly. Israel has accepted responsibility for the incident as a tragic accident and has announced an investigation into the matter. In light of the escalating tensions, India has been advocating for de-escalation and creating conditions for direct peace negotiations towards resolving the Palestine issue.
The situation in Rafah has raised concerns globally, with Israel’s military offensive in Gaza continuing amidst the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Despite the international outrage and calls for respecting international humanitarian law, the conflict has claimed thousands of lives and displaced many more. India’s stance on the issue remains rooted in the promotion of peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the longstanding conflict.
