In a recent development, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her country’s preference for India over China for the execution of a $1 billion river development project. The project in question is the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration initiative, aimed at better managing the river’s waters.

During a press conference in Dhaka, Prime Minister Hasina made it clear that while China is ready to undertake the project, she personally wants India to handle it. This decision is significant as both China and India have been competing for influence in Bangladesh.

The Teesta River, which runs for 414 km and flows from India into Bangladesh, has been a focal point in discussions between the two countries. The issue of sharing the river’s water has been on the table since 2011, but a concrete agreement has not been reached yet due to objections from the eastern Indian state of West Bengal.

India’s hesitation in resolving the matter prompted China to propose its own plan for the river. However, in light of security concerns surrounding Chinese involvement near its borders, India responded with its offer earlier this year.

Prime Minister Hasina emphasized the importance of India’s role in the project, citing India’s historical management of the Teesta River’s waters as a key factor in her decision. With both countries conducting feasibility studies, the project’s execution by India is seen as a top priority by Bangladesh.

The preference for India over China in this project not only highlights the strategic significance of regional partnerships but also underscores the trust and cooperation between Bangladesh and India in addressing mutual concerns regarding shared water resources. As the discussions progress, it will be interesting to see how this choice impacts the dynamics of the region and the ongoing competition for influence between China and India.
