In a recent development highlighting the strengthening ties between India and Russia, New Delhi has urged Moscow to expedite the delivery of the S-400 air defense missile system. Despite initial delays due to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, India has been assured that the fourth and fifth squadrons of the advanced system will be delivered by March 2026 and October 2026 respectively. India, as the world’s largest arms importer, heavily relies on Russian technology for its conventional weaponry. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine on the timely delivery of arms and equipment.\

The contract for the purchase of five squadrons of the S-400 air defense system was signed in 2019, with Russia. India’s recent request to expedite deliveries aimed at meeting the Indian Air Force requirements and advancing the delivery schedule. Three air defense systems have already been supplied by Russia and deployed along the China and Pakistan front, with the remaining squadrons expected to bolster India’s defense capabilities in handling aerial intrusions by enemy aircraft, missiles, and ballistic threats. \

With the close ties between India and Russia, further military joint ventures in production and maintenance of weapon systems are in the works. The recent meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin have solidified the relationship between the two countries, paving the way for enhanced defense cooperation.
